Food processing is an essential step in the production of healthy and safe food. Although there are challenges in this sector, technology offers great potential. To realize this potential, more attention must be paid to it.

QING has partnered with Highfive, Next Tech Food Factories and Extreme Tech Challenges to support the first Startup Innovation Awards in the Digital Innovation in Food Processing category during the World Food Forum. This event took place last week and in this article we would like to tell you more.

Why the food industry needs innovation now

Farmers and growers invest a lot of energy and care in the production of our food. However, before we can actually consume it, it must be processed into a finished product. Food processing involves many manual operations and specialized expertise, but the availability of this knowledge and skills is rapidly diminishing. If we do nothing, this will become a huge problem leading to inefficiency, lower quality and waste of perfectly healthy food.

Technology allows us to significantly improve the way we process food. This results in:

  • Less waste
  • Better quality
  • Increased food safety

Technology also has a positive impact on the economy. The profitability of food processors increases, leading to better jobs. Thus, we can make food processing more attractive to young talent.

Food processing deserves more attention

Food processing needs more attention at the global level. It is crucial to work together to ensure that new technologies find their way to users: food producers.

That's why QING has partnered with Highfive, Next Tech Food Factories and Extreme Tech Challenges to support the first Start-up Innovation Awards for Digital Innovation in Food Processing. Innovative start-ups will be given a stage here to showcase their ideas that contribute to a sustainable food system. ‍Weare very proud to have been given the opportunity to participate in this pilot.

‍Wecongratulate Safi on winning the first-ever Start-up Innovation Award in Digital Innovation in Food Processing and look forward to following their development.

Safi is committed to safe milk production in Africa. Milk is an important source of nutrients for children and pregnant women. Safi offers a pasteurization solution: a small, portable device that operates without electricity. It allows farmers to pasteurize their daily milk supply in just three minutes. This not only helps make milk safer, but also improves their financial situation by selling pasteurized milk.

World Food Forum

The World Food Forum (WFF) is an international platform focused on transforming the food chain, with a special focus on innovation and collaboration between sectors. From Oct. 14-18, 2024, policymakers, experts, businesses and young entrepreneurs gathered in Rome to find concrete solutions to challenges such as food security and sustainability in the food industry. This annual event, organized by FAO, sets the tone for the future of food production and consumption worldwide.

Side event: Digital Innovation in Food Processing: Catalyzing Change

In addition to the award ceremonies, QING also had the privilege of participating in the side event, Digital Innovation in Food Processing: Catalyzing Change.

This was the only session during the World Food Forum that focused on food processing within our food system. Along with an inspiring panel of speakers, it emphasized that innovation in food processing is essential to creating a sustainable food system for the future.

There was agreement on the following points:

  • The power of collaboration and sharing expertise is essential.
  • Start with small steps to leverage innovations in food processing.
  • Innovation in food processing will have a significant impact on making our food system sustainable for future generations.

It was great to see that our session participants agreed. There is a great demand for more discussions on food processing during future editions, and we are happy to take on the challenge of hosting more sessions next year and putting this topic back on the agenda!

We look forward to continuing the discussion and drawing even more attention to food processing innovation in the future!
