Upgrade machine food industry

The Dutch manufacturing industry experienced a 10.3% drop in production in September 2023 from a year earlier, according to CBS. This was the ninth consecutive month that industrial production declined.

This decline was also reflected in the food industry, where production fell by 4.4%. Food producers have recently invested less in new machinery. This is expected to be partly due to rising interest rates. A smart and strategic alternative is to invest in machinery upgrades and maintenance. Find out here what benefits you can gain by upgrading existing machines with technology.

The benefits of upgrading

Buying a new machine is not always a viable option. Upgrading existing machines is, in most cases, more accessible and a good alternative. And that's what happened last year; demand for repair and maintenance shot up, industry-wide, by about 30% (source: CBS).

Perhaps obvious, but cost savings is obviously a big advantage of upgrading existing machines. By upgrading existing machines, you can save significant costs and do not take a big financial risk compared to buying a new machine. It brings these benefits even more:

  • Upgrades extend the life of a machine, making you make even better use of the investment.
  • Improving machines is applied faster than developing and implementing new systems. There is less chance of having to stop production and it ensures continuity.
  • In the food industry, consumer demands and regulations regarding food safety can change. By upgrading, you can adapt production processes more easily and keep up with developments.
  • By upgrading existing machines , you build new knowledge and expertise within the company. This can prevent you from having to invest in new expertise and retraining staff.

More resilient through technology

By adopting new technologies for machine improvement, you become more resilient. This makes you more responsive to market changes and challenges.

One challenge that keeps growing within the food industry is the labor shortage. One consequence is that efficiency and productivity are down. By automating existing processes, you are less dependent on manual labor. Automation and robotization also increase accuracy and continuity in production processes.

Using real-time monitoring of current processes provides timely insights into performance and potential malfunctions. This also makes it possible to predict when maintenance is needed. Data and AI can play a role here because they can process and interpret large amounts of data.

Creating a digital twin, a virtual version of your existing machine, allows you to optimize with minimal risk. Optimizations are first tested on the digital twin, allowing you to test different scenarios in the virtual world before applying them in practice.

Improved production cycle

Technology applications take several benefits and positively impact the entire production cycle, including:

  • Higher production efficiency and productivity.
  • Ensuring quality and better quality control.
  • Reduced risk of failure and machine downtime through problem detection.
  • Energy-efficient and more sustainable processes with longer service life.

Start upgrading

For a successful upgrade, it is essential to first clearly define the goals and results you want to achieve. Start with a thorough analysis of the current situation and performance so that you know exactly what is working well and where there is room for improvement. This forms the basis for a targeted approach.

QING is happy to support you in this process. Together we look at the requirements, wishes and future performance of (a specific part of) the production process. In this way, we jointly draw up a concrete plan for the future. Whether it's about process automation or structural quality improvements, you can come to us with various issues and objectives.

We don't just deliver applications; we develop and deliver solutions that make your production process as profitable as possible.
