Masévon started looking for a party that could realize a Digital Twin and also deliver it as an end product for their own use. QING eventually emerged as a suitable partner.

QING got to work creating the Digital Twin for a new software development. Software Engineers from Masévon wrote a PLC software for the machine. The main reason Masévon is using Digital Twin is to speed up the development time for the customer. With this technology, you don't have to wait to validate the new software until the machine is built. During the development phase, the software can be assessed in the interim. The processes are rebuilt in a virtual environment and in the virtual environment you let the processes run. With this technology you exclude as many risks as possible.

Agile Approach

Before the project started, Masévon and the engineers from QING drew up a clear specification of what the Digital Twin should be like. After all expectations and requirements were clear, we drew up a plan of approach. This enabled us to work purposefully on the implementation of the Digital Twin.  

We chose an Agile approach. We started small. We divided the plan into several phases. For each phase, we looked at the complexity and mapped out the potential challenges and risks.

When applying an Agile approach, you create overview and maintain control throughout the project. After each completed phase there is an evaluation and room for adjustment. An Agile working method ensures that engineers are constantly aware of changing circumstances and can respond quickly.  

There are sufficient contact moments through which Masévon stays informed of all developments. This also allowed Masévon to easily involve their customer in the process.

Apply in practice

One of the main focuses during the project is a good handover of the product. After delivering the product, the software engineers want to be able to control the Digital Twin as independently as possible and make adjustments where necessary. The wish is to be as independent as possible; in case of errors in the system, adjustments must be easy to make. We have done this by providing clear documentation and by giving a basic training with relevant practical examples.

The many advantages of Digital Twin

Masévon can add value to their own customers with the Digital Twin. With the image material, they can show the progress of the development and the customer can easily give feedback based on this.

Further:

• multiple Software Engineers can work on the development of the machine simultaneously,
• different scenarios can be tested. Failure scenarios can be tested: what happens if a sensor fails or if the output is not emptied? Bottlenecks in production become visible.
• the Digital Twin can be used for training purposes, for example with Virtual Reality.
