Together with Sanovo, we have developed a UV-C retrofit kit for the Optigrader 600 grading machine. The Optigrader 600 is a fully automatic egg grading machine. This machine not only determines the weight class of the egg, but also checks the egg for dirt and possible cracks in the eggshell. On the egg shell there are several bacteria that can be transferred to the machine parts of the grading machine. To disinfect the eggs and prevent contamination of the machine parts, we have developed and integrated a UV-C module.
Protoyping
The Optigrader processes 216,000 eggs per hour. The design of the machine is completely hygienic and even includes a CIP system, 'Cleaning in place'. This system ensures that the machine cleans itself automatically. The fact that the machine surface is also disinfected during production is a unique method in the egg grading industry.
A solution with UV-C light can be harmful to health. For example, vision may be impaired if eyes are exposed to direct radiation. An important part of this project was to ensure the safety of the operators.
Based on our own research, research in cooperation with Wageningen University & Research and the tests we did, we were able to determine how to work safely with UV-C light. We discovered the best position in the machine to apply the UV-C light and how much UV-C light intensity is needed to achieve the right reduction in bacteria. Of course, you want to get the maximum benefit from this solution. We also conducted tests with reflective material.
On the basis of the prototype of the module, we were able to establish definitively whether all the solutions were sufficient to be able to work safely on the machine. The UV-C module has all kinds of seals and light blocking devices to prevent the UV-C light from reaching the outside. Part of the UV-C light was reflected from the floor and could have hit the operator. Blocking skirts have been installed to exclude this. On the input side, the eggs pass through a light barrier to ensure that no unwanted UV-C light escapes.
One of the requirements was that the UV-C module could be installed and retrofit in one day. No modifications were to be made to the existing Optigrader design, not even extra holes.
Through intensive cooperation with the team at Sanovo, we managed to achieve all the objectives:
